This week’s post: a summary of the documentary, “The Genius of Design – The Ghost within the Machine.”
In the first episode, The ghost within the machine, is all about the first generations of designers and the birth of the industrial design period.
From the generation where all design were manmade, made with a passion and feelings that resulted in a creative and beautiful design product.
We get an inside look at the manmade design workshops with Glass, Clay - with the making of clay vases with figures, and Iron with the process of making the famous Darby iron pot.
As Designer we need to design to meet the need of the world and that was the beginning of the industrial design period. The industrial machines made life easier for the worker, it was time for the design world to keep up with the rest of the world, and produce more for less! But did the machine replace labor?
Henry Fords, the Model T, the black car - designed for all and to last a life time. Is a great example of the industrial design process global issues of mass production, over production and consumption. One car took 12,5 hours to built by hand, with mass production it only took 93 min. With the success of the first car, everyone wanted it and also everyone got it, and that resulted in overproduction with the lesson that people want design that can change and improve.
Good Design is as little design as possible, innovative, useful, aesthetic, honest...
We live in a design world - for us - by us!!
ThEsiS!!
One of the requirements to my BA Honors Degree is to write a thesis!! We are talking 8000 worlds, presentation date January 17 2011. So wish me luck!!
My working topic; "How to influence sustainable architecture and the environment through the use of the roof"
I will look at the history of green roofs, from the Hanging Garden of Babylon to the 21st-centuries modern green roofs. The technical aspect of who green roof are built, divided into different categories, how the different climate influence the use of green roofs and why green roofs are important in an urban setting, benefits and disadvantages, look at possibilities in the future and last I will do a couple of case studies. So if anyone knows about any green roofs in the Dublin area (also areas from Oslo down to Gothenburg) let me know!! Thanks :o)
Here are some inspirational pictures of green roof around the world, enjoy!!

DesIgN tHeoRy BlOg post nO: 2
The question of the week: post any design (interior, building or a product) that illustrates each of the de
sign principals and elements.
The awareness of what the design elements and principles are, is the first step in the direction of a great and successful design.
The design elements are: Form, Shape, Color, Texture, and Light.
The Design Principles are: Proportion, Scale, Balance, Unity/Variety, Rhythm, and Emphasis.
The design principles are used to arrange or organize the design elements.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Design principles and elements in Tadao Ando`s Church of Light.

The room is very balanced with the symmetrical feeling in the design. The color, material and texture on the light concrete walls and ceiling creates a unity, and against the heavy dark timber floor and furniture, the contrast of light and dark within the room creates a rhythm and a variety.
The design of the four rectangular forms that creates the shape off a cross together with it proportion and scale, creating a feature by letting natural light get through it and making this truly an emphasis design.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The use of light, different shapes and form create a building with proportion. The design on the buildings facades creates different proportion between the white shapes and the same shapes used on the windows in s darker color. Light has been used to improve the main feature on the facades, which also create rhythm.
-------------------------------------------------------------
The bronzed door is an example of the design principle - Scale. The doors are in an bigger scale than a normal door, as well as together by the use of a different texture on the doors the building gets variety and the doors become one of the main features on the buildings facades.
--------------------------------------------------------------
The symmetrical design creates balance and unity within the church interior design. Skylight, colors and light create a cross in the ceiling. This makes the interior reflect the main purpose of the space, with a relaxing, balanced and united feeling.
---------------------------------------------------------------
The rhythm and variety in this image is created by the use of different colors and shapes.
-------------------------------------------------------------
The emphasis in this image is created by the bull painted on the wall. The bull gets a special attention due to the rest off the room, the lady and the cabinet in pink has all an elegant and classic look.

DeSIgN tHEorY bLOg PosT nO.1
For my design theory class I have to start a learning log, and every week I have to write on my blog responding to my teachers “question of the week”…
For the extra curious once, here is the link to my design theory class blog…
http://interiorarchitecturedesigntheory.blogspot.com/
So this weeks´ topic is: IDEOLOGY
And the question of the week is;
What is your own ideology in your studio project?
Regarding my mini project the ideology in this project has been to create an apartment where the troubled teenager can feel at home, safe and welcomed, a place where they can adapt into a “normal family lifestyle”.
To create a successful home for the teenagers, they need their own bed- and bathroom, giving them a place that is only theirs, and a place they have to take care off alone, and at the same time they can be a part of the social area by using the area within the apartment that focus on each of the teenagers´ main interest and skill. Such as, an art studio, a library full of books, big kitchen with a herb garden and a guitar corner. This is so their interest hopefully will grow and develop, and maybe help them find out what they want to studying in college. By placing this area in the common rooms the teenagers will learn have to interact with other youths, as well learning something new.
I have not clue if I am on the right track here, but after my understanding of it, is what I have mentioned above the ideology for my mini project.

My FinAL ProJeCt

The building I have chosen for my BA Honors Degree project is The Workshop Halls (Verkstedhallene, Standen 3), on Aker Brygge, Oslo, Norway. This is one off two buildings that belongs to Aker Brygge Shopping.

So with its perfect location, am I redesigning The Workshop Halls into The Ultimate Travel Center. This center is going to work as a gathering place for people with a passion for traveling! Facilities within the center are going to be, travel- information, agencies, shops, library, gallery and language learning classes. The centre will also have a restaurant, café, bar/nightclub and a hostel for the travelers that are passing through Oslo on their journey.
So as of now…
- In Studio I am working on a project report, including research on the existing building, the site, and the client brief. This report is due on November 2nd.
- In cad, I am drawing up all the existing plans, sections and elevations in AutoCad from the pdf`s drawing I got off the building. By November 5th I have to have a 3D model done of the exterior.
